Cingjing Farm

To mark the turning of another yearly cycle of Geoff's life we went to Cingjing farm. It was so good! It was cold, and there were sheep and cows. I loved it there. Apparently you can carry on the road that took us there and it will eventually take you to the other side of the Island to Hualien. I'm thinking of a great vacation week of driving over there :) (more pictures to follow)

Fireworks in the park

I was invited for dinner by Renee and Geoff. We had delicious tacos and non-bake cookies. Yum. Renee is a great cook! When I got back to my apartment there were folks in the park setting off fireworks. I watched from my window for a little while. The great thing about where I live is that it is quieter than other places could be in Taichung, but the park amplifies sound...so if there is noise, then it is loud. So I didn't watch for long.

Mid-Autumn Festival

Mid-Autumn Festival is a national holiday in Taiwan. It is the second biggest festival besides Spring festival.

There are lots of stories associated with the festival. It is also known as Moon Festival, because the stories are associated with the moon. So it is traditional to eat moon cakes. I'll take a pic of one when I open one. I was given a box from a parent of one of my kindy kids. Here are three stories.

1. Chang'e and Hou Yi

Mid-Autumn Festival Story Long long ago, there were 10 suns in the sky. They burnt all the plants on the earth. People were dying.

One day, a hero whose name was Hou Yi used his bow and arrows to shoot down nine of them. All the people on the earth were saved.

One day, the queen of heaven gave Hou Yi a bottle elixir that could make Hou Yi become an immortal, but the elixir was only efficacious for one person. Hou Yi did want to become an immortal, but he wanted to stay with his beautiful wife Chang'e more, so he didn't drink the elixir and asked his wife Chang'e to keep it for him.

Hou Yi was becoming more and more famous after he shot down the nine suns and more and more men wanted Hou Yi to be their master. Most of them were accepted by Hou Yi.

Not every student of Hou Yi had good morality. Feng Meng, one of his students, wanted to seize his elixir. One day, Hou Yi went hunting with his students, but Feng Meng pretended to be ill and stay at home. When making sure Hou Yi had gone he went to Hou Yi's house and tried to force Chang'e to give him the elixir. Chang'e knew she couldn't defeat Feng Meng so she drank the elixir immediately. The elixir made her become an immortal and fly higher and higher. Finally, she stopped on the moon.

From then on, people often pray to Chang'e for fortune and safety. During the Mid-Autumn Festival they offer lots of foods to Chang'e.

2. Wu Gang and the Cherry Bay

Story of Moon Festival in ChinaWu Gang was a woodchopper. He always wanted to become an immortal, but he never tried his best to learn the necessary theurgy. The Jade Emperor got angry with him because of his attitude. In order to punish him, the Jade Emperor planted a huge cherry bay, which was 1665 meters (5460 ft) high, on the moon and ordered Wu Gang to chop it down, then Wu Gang could become an immortal.

This time, Wu Gang was very serious, but he could never finish his work. The cherry bay healed every time that Wu Gang chopped it. Wu Gang wouldn’t give up. He tried time and time again.

On unclouded nights people can see some obvious shadows on the moon. They are made by the huge cherry bay.

3. The Jade Rabbit

One day, three immortals who were living in heaven came to the earth. They asked a fox, a monkey and a rabbit to find some food for them respectively. The fox and the monkey both found something for the three immortals while the rabbit got nothing. The rabbit felt very sorry for the three immortals. Finally, he jumped into the fire and said to the three immortals, "Eat me, please!" The three immortal were deeply moved by the rabbit. They decided to give the rabbit the title of "Jade Rabbit" and let him accompany Chang'e in the Moon Palace.

Mid week day off- Apartment Pictures

Today is Mid-Autumn Festival. More info on this in the next post. It is a national holiday, so we got the day off work. I spent it by having a lie in, till 10am. Then I cleaned the apartment. Dave is away at the moment, so I thought it would be nice for him to come back to a clean place. That and it needed done and I finally had the time to do it. I begrudge the idea of cleaning on the weekends because I rarely have time for myself, I don't want to spend it cleaning.

I also sorted my bedroom. It has been a mess since I moved in because I never had the time to devote to it to get it organised. Now it is lovely, clean and tidy :D

Here are a few long-awaited pics of the apartment.

This is biscuits :)

Basianshan National Forest Recreational Area

Geoff, Renee and I went to Basianshan National Forest Recreational Area (八仙山森林遊樂區)What a mouth full. haha. We drove for a long, long time on the road to Guguan. We drove on the road that takes you through the mountains. A couple of years ago there was a big mud slide so the road is closed past Guguan. If you continue on the road you can get to the other side of the Island. It's the cross Island Highway (though it's not much of a highway- or maybe that is a different road).

Here is a link for the government website:

It was beautiful there. It was a shame, when we left Taichung it was so sunny and warm, then as we get closer to the park it started to rain. And it rained for a long time. So we ended up soaked. It was still beautiful.

It was amazing scenery when driving, and the park itself was, wow!
There was moss! I saw moss in Taiwan :D I was so giddy when I saw it, it was actually quite sad. haha. Here are a couple of pictures...

It's a Taiwanese Treebeard. haha.

A pretty pic methinks. Before we were walking around a lady gave us two umbrellas. It was so nice of her. I still have the one given to me. Saved me from having to buy one...my last umbrella broke.
